Dryer Lint Buildup Causes Fire In Prince William County Home

Prince William County Fire and Rescue said no one was injured in the house fire tied to dryer lint buildup.

DUMFRIES, VA — Dryer lint was responsible for a house fire that displaced five residents in Dumfries on Sunday, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue.

Around 1:21 p.m. Sunday, units responded to the 3000 block of Desert Palm Court in Dumfries for a house fire. Firefighters found the blaze in the back of the single-family home. The home had moderate damage from the fire and was determined to be unsafe to occupy. Five people were displaced, but no one was injured.

A fire marshal's office investigation determined the cause of the fire was excessive lint built up in the dryer vent that ignited. The fire department says excessive lint not only affects the efficiency of the dryer but poses a significant fire hazard. The fire marshal's office recommends cleaning dryer vents annually through a professional service.
