Next Star Wars Film Has A Title

Star Wars Episode VIII, the latest in the "Skywalker saga," will be released in late 2017.

The next chapter in the Star Wars saga has a title, and it may sound familiar. "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will be released on Dec. 15, 2017.

"We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy," Lucas Film producers wrote in a statement Monday morning. "In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga."

The film follows the dramatic conclusion to 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It is written and directed by Rian Johnson, known for "Looper."

It's worth noting that, while the film has a release date of Dec. 15, the poster released on Twitter only mentions "December." That could mean an earlier debut for what is becoming an annual holiday theatrical event.

The film's title draws allusions to the third film in the franchise: "Return of the Jedi."

There's little that we know about the plot for "The Last Jedi." Luke Skywalker will likely be training a new Jedi: the mysterious Rey, played by Daisy Ridley.
