Denny Heck on DOMA Decision: State, Country Have Come a Long Way

As one of members who urged the Supreme Court earlier to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, the Olympia Democrat says he's pleased with ruling.

Congressman Denny Heck released the following statement this morning regarding today’s United States Supreme Court Decision:

“As one of more than two-hundred Members of Congress who signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court earlier this year urging them to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, and as a supporter of Referendum 74 last year, I am very pleased and deeply gratified by today’s decision.

All lawful marriages performed in Washington State will now be recognized equally by the federal government for purposes of joint income tax filings, Social Security benefits, veterans’ benefits and more. With today’s ruling, all Washington families are now treated equally under the law. Our state and our country have come a long way.”
