No Arrest Made After 6-Hour Standoff In Lakewood

A shots fired call had police putting schools in lockdown and evacuating neighbors, but after hours with no progress, it was all called off.

LAKEWOOD, WA — A six-hour standoff between Lakewood Police, the Sheriff's Department and a barricaded suspect ended Friday with no arrests, after police say they failed to make any sort of contact with the suspect.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department first reported the standoff just after 8 a.m., saying that their deputies had been called to reports of shots fired in a home in the 10500 block of 109th Ave SW, just on the western edge of Lakewood city limits.

When deputies arrived, they say everyone except the suspected shooter had left the home — with no injuries, no one was hit by the gunfire — but that the shooter was holding out inside the house and refusing to communicate with law enforcement.

Because several gunshots had already been fired, deputies and Lakewood police made the call to evacuate several nearby homes, and put nearby schools in lockdown while they tried to negotiate with the suspect. All lockdowns and evacuations have since been lifted.

Once on scene, negotiators used bullhorns, a PA system, even had friends and family call the suspect, but to no avail. Mental health professionals also responded to assist with negotiations, but again all attempts at contact failed.

After at least six hours of total silence from the suspect, deputies say they called off the response at around 2:15 p.m.

Deputies say they will attempt to contact and bring the suspect into custody at some later point. The suspect's housemate has reportedly found a different, safer place to stay in the meantime.
