LAKEWOOD, WA — Lakewood Mayor Jason Whalen is hoping to hear from the community on local issues.

Former Mayor Don Anderson hosted a weekly “Coffee with the Mayor” session, and the new mayor says he would like to continue seeking community input through a similar, bimonthly event. Whalen's “Community Coffeehouse” sessions will be held every other month on the fourth Thursday of that month, starting with a session on Thursday, Jan. 27. Sessions will be themed, and will include presentations from the mayor or other community leaders, but will also include time for community members to ask questions or share concerns on the topic of choice.

“I love to hear how it’s going for Lakewood residents, what issues matter most to you, and what your ideas are to solve them," Whalen said "These sessions will help keep you appraised on important topics, and help us keep in touch with your perspectives on these issues. All are welcome!”

This month's inaugural session will discuss summer events and improvements to Lakewood parks, the city said.

Whalen, who formerly served as the Deputy Mayor of Lakewood, recently stepped into mayoral role after Anderson announced he would not seek re-election late last year. Anderson endorsed Whalen as his replacement, and will work with Whalen as he continues to serve the final two years of his term on the city council.
