Pierce County Sheriff's Department deputies and forensic investigators remained at the home through midday, clearing the scene and checking for evidence. The homeowners have also reportedly been cooperative with their investigation, and were unharmed during the break-in.

Detectives have said they are investigating the incident as a homicide, but the 31-year-old homeowner has not been placed under arrest, and the case is being sent to the Pierce County Prosecutor's Office for review.
