Letter To The Editor: Time To Give Renton Residents A Say In Library's Future

I would like to respectfully take issue with . He says the silent majority want our beautiful Downtown Cedar River Library moved. Really? If that’s the case how come more than .  And why did 80% of people my family asked sign these petitions?  Many thanked us for the opportunity to have their voices heard. The good Captain certainly hasn't talked to these thousands of Renton residents and local businesses.

Captain Benedetti also said a vocal minority are problem makers and our intent is to resist any change to the continuing growth and cultural diversity of our city. Again, really?

We’re all interested in the well-being and growth of our city. I want a vibrant city for my children. We just don’t want our landmark library—our Pike Place Market --ripped out from the accompanying natural beauty over the Cedar River and inside Liberty Park. What’s wrong with wanting to preserve our treasured places? To keep the Library where it is doesn’t mean you are against growth. It just means we want to keep the places that nourish our souls.

Finally, the people who signed the petition aren’t against cultural diversity. In fact, they represent our cultural diversity!  When you examine the names of those who signed you will see numerous names representing the rich mosaic of our community who think the Downtown Library is a treasured place.  In addition, there were a number of ethnic businesses and people of color who helped us collect signatures.

It’s time to give what the majority of Renton residents want: a say in the future of their beloved Downtown Library. Why are city leaders afraid to let this happen?
