Letter To The Editor: Renton Dancers Support Obama

I just want to share news of a fun event that happened in Renton recently! On June 30th, 24 people gathered to learn, dance and film “Hold on to Your Dream” in just two hours.  The dancers – ranging from advanced line dancers to people who had never lined danced before – were led by instructor Jeannette Baker. The video can be seen on youtube (or click on the thumbnail image to the right).

I am just an educator and mom, and was trying to think of how we can create some positive energy at a time when so much seems negative. I love how line dancing involves the feeling of a group, while allowing you to interpret the dance the way you like. I don’t have much money, but I thought if we all did something that could tap into people’s energy, that might lead to some contributions to Obama’s campaign. I created the line dance to go to Stevie Wonder’s 1996 “Hold on to Your Dream.” One of the first things President Obama did when he was elected was to award Wonder with the nation’s top award in pop music, and Wonder was a great supporter of Obama’s election. His timeless themes and moving lyrics prompted me to write the dance.

This is a dance that even non-dancers can learn — I posted explanations of how to do it on youtube as well. I just want people to get up, dance, connect with each other, and remember why we support Obama.
