Sen. Margarita Prentice Honored By City Of Renton For Her Tireless Efforts To Help Those In Need

Renton’s State Senate Debriefing and Legislative Reception deviated from the routine season re-cap, mentions of projects on the horizon, and desires for future funding to honor a longtime Senator.

Following the business part of the meeting, Renton Mayor Denis Law surprised outgoing Senator Margarita Prentice with the announcement of a donation fund — established in her name — for .

“Throughout her career, Senator Prentice has been a champion of addressing the concerns of the special needs and developmentally disabled communities,” wrote Economic Development Director Suzanne Dale Estey in an email to the meeting’s attendees. “This community contribution in Senator Prentice’s honor will be a legacy gift to help support a wonderful project for the greater Renton community and beyond.”

Prentice’s Short stature has been no measure for her contributions to the South Sound, said Lobbyist Doug Levy.

“You’re losing a giant,” he said of the woman who "has done so many amazing things."

Renton Mayor Denis Law couldn’t have agreed more.

“Every one of our institutions have benefitted from the work that (Prentice) has done,” he said.

While Prentice diligently worked toward her goals for the area, she did so with grace and compassion for those around her.

“People might describe you as tireless, giving, tough but caring, visionary, and the voice for those in need,” said Terry Higashiyama, Community Services Administrator. But to Higashiyama, Prentice has served as a mentor.

, and the City will host an Open House on Thursday, June 28 for community input into the project. The playground is a joint effort between the City of Renton and the Renton School District. Renton Rotary has also pledged a generous donation to the project, according to City officials.
