Thanks to a long-standing partnership with MOHAI, every year, Seattle Fire marks the anniversary of the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. The fire destroyed a large portion of downtown Seattle back then, but more importantly, led to the rise of a city-wide firefighting force, mandated changes to prevent future building fires, and authorized gear and equipment to protect firefighters from deadly heat and flames.
Today’s Fire Day emphasizes what parents and caregivers can do to teach their children how to stay safe and prevent fire at home or at play – a need perhaps felt even more as Seattle remains in Phase I of the COVID-19 re-opening.
Join our livestreamed events at 10 a.m. as Fire Chief Harold Scoggins kicks off the day with his mighty rendition of “No Dragons for Tea,” an ominous tale of what happens when a dragon pays a visit to a friend’s house. Stay with the Chief for his second story, “Mikey Makes a Mess,” to learn what happens when Mikey finds matches lying around the house.
After that and all through the day, ask your questions – in either English or Spanish! Chief Scoggins and Seattle firefighters will answer your comments and questions live.
Other livestreamed sessions include:
- 10:30 a.m. Spanish Story Time “Mikey Hace un Desorden” and Q & A with Firefighter Leo
- 11:00 a.m. 2nd Story Time and Q & A with Fire Chief Scoggins
- 11:30 a.m. Fire Dog Demo and Q & A with Firefighter Jason and Fire Dog Cannon
- 12:30 p.m. A Day in the Life Q & A with Lt. Amina and Firefighter Leo
In addition, take a digital tour of a fire engine, a fire boat, a fire station, a medic unit and explore what it takes get hires as a firefighter. Young firefighters-in-training will love learning fire safety tips, making crafts at home, and interacting online with real Seattle firefighters.
