Here are the top three stories in Spokane today:
- A patient who was assaulted by another patient at Eastern State Hospital has died from his injuries. The unnamed male victim was allegedly assaulted by Martay L. Ellis, 24, on Mar. 22. Ellis is now being charged with second-degree murder. (Spokane County Sheriff's Office)
- Spokane community members are raising money to help support Ukraine as the city prepares to welcome refugees. The U.S. has committed to helping Ukraine refugees, and Spokane is getting ready to accept many. Local businesses and churches are also holding raising money to help the citizens of Ukraine. - The Woman’s Club of Spokane is asking the community for support. The nonprofit organization, formed in 1905, aims to continue to support women’s issues, volunteerism, community enrichment, and history. “We have a great board of directors that has been working in all areas to ensure that the club has another 100 years,” said a spokesperson for the Club. - The Spokane Humane Society shared information about Louise, a sweet, 5-year-old dog in need of a forever home after her owner passed away. Louise is friendly and enjoys meeting new people, but she needs to go to a home where she will be the only pet. (Instagram)
- Drugs and gangs were responsible for the majority of homicidal violence in Spokane in 2021, according to data from Spokane Police Department and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Two dozen people were reportedly killed in Spokane County due to events associated with drugs or gangs. (The Spokesman Review)
- Spokane Children's Theatre is now selling tickets for “A Year With Frog and Toad.” The play will run on select dates between Apr. 15 and May 1. (Facebook)
