Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Spokane so special.

Spokane is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Spokane has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Spokane is the birthplace of the first Father's Day celebration. In 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd initiated the holiday in honor of her father, who was a single parent to six children as a single parent.
- The largest urban waterfall in the United States is located in Spokane. The Spokane Falls cascade over two dams and basalt rock to create an upper and lower waterfall system.
- Since 1938, the Spokane Lilac Festival has been a volunteer-run event honoring the military. Spokane is often referred to as the “Lilac City.”
- Spokane is home to The Historic Davenport Hotel — considered one of the most modern hotels when it opened in 1914. The hotel was reimagined in 2002 but still holds the history and elegance of its 100-plus years of history.
- Riverfront Park was the location for Expo ‘74, the first environmentally-themed World’s Fair. The 1974 fair ran from May to November and some structures are still standing today.
