Additional Funding for Election Moves Forward

The grant provides funding for additional election apparatus, tabulators, drive-up voting sites, and additional PPE for election workers

Additional money is being earmarked for election needs like equipment and additional poll workers.

At Monday's meeting of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee the committee approved three files sponsored by Common Council President Cavalier Johnson. The first is file #200755 – a resolution relative to acceptance and expenditure of the Center for Tech and Civic Life grant. This resolution authorizes the Election Commission to accept and expend an additional $1,255,000. The grant will provide funding for additional election apparatus, tabulators, drive-up voting sites, and additional personal protective equipment for election workers.

The committee also recommended approval of a second election file, file #200749 – a resolution directing department heads to recruit staff who are willing and able to be assigned to work for the Election Commission during the November 2020 election. This file intends to use City of Milwaukee staff to supplement any shortage in election workers that exists.

“Having fair, safe, secure and trustworthy election processes is crucial, and these
files help the city bolster its resources less than one month from the election,” Alderman
Johnson said. “I want to thank the Election Commission for their hard work and diligence
in this particularly challenging election year as they work to ensure residents have the
best and safest voting experience possible.”

These files will be before the full Common Council for adoption at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, October 13th.
