Funeral Set For Fallen Milwaukee Officer, Flags To Be Set Half-Staff

MILWAUKEE, WI — The funeral for the Milwaukee police officer who was killed Tuesday when a struggle with a suspect turned to gunfire has been scheduled for Monday in Brookfield, according to Krause Funeral Home.

The funeral for Peter Jerving will be marked by the state and nation's flags flying at half mast across Wisconsin, Gov. Tony Evers announced on Twitter Thursday. Besides the flags at half-mast, several landmark buildings in Milwaukee will be lit in blue to honor Jerving, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Visitation for Jerving is scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Elmbrook Church of Brookfield at 777 South Barker Road, according to the listing by Krause.

Jerving was 37 when he was fatally shot with four years of experience on the force, according to police. His death sent police departments across the region into mourning.

Jerving's funeral procession from downtown Milwaukee to Brookfield on Tuesday was lined with hundreds of first responders reaching nearly 20 miles long, according to a report by WISN12 and other outlets.

The shooting happened when Jerving and his partner were called out to the 2700 block of south 14th Street early Tuesday just after 1 a.m. for a report of a suspect in a robbery that happened just hours before, police said.

The suspect fled and ignored officers until a struggle occurred, ending in the death of both involved, police said. Jerving was brought to a hospital where he died despite attempts to save him, while the 19-year-old robbery suspect was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.
