Milwaukee Area Braces For Chances Of 6-10 Inches Of Snow Into Thursday

Here are the cities in Milwaukee County where a snow emergency was declared amid chances of near-blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Much of Milwaukee County is bracing for a winter storm on Thursday that could bring between 5-10 inches of snow and cause trouble for commuters into the evening, according to national forecasters.

The National Weather Service put a winter storm warning into effect across Milwaukee County from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday. Residents in the area can expect heavy snow accumulations of between 6-10 inches with the highest amounts closer to the lake, according to the NWS. Amid the snow, wind gusts could pick up to 35-40 mph, possibly causing blizzard conditions in the afternoon and evening, the NWS said.

Some cities in the region have declared snow emergencies, impacting street parking and other resources, while several school systems across the region have closed for the storm.

Here are where snow emergencies are declared:

Franklin declared a snow emergency effective from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m., during which no on-street parking is allowed.

Milwaukee has not declared a snow emergency, but Mayor Cavalier Johnson declared a severe weather emergency for the city effective at noon, meaning all non-essential city operations close at noon. The city's website said all main streets were treated on Wednesday with brine and residential streets were treated beginning early Thursday morning. The city said people should avoid unnecessary travel.

In Greendale, a snow emergency is in effect from 10 a.m. Thursday until 3 p.m. Friday, meaning vehicles cannot park on public streets. Police in the village also reminded residents that they must clear walkways within 12 hours of a storm.

In Greenfield, a snow emergency was issued from 12 p.m. Thursday until noon on Friday, meaning nobody can park on the following streets: S. 27th Street, S. 35th Street, S. 43rd Street, S. 51st Street, S. 60th Street, S. 68th Street, S. 76th Street, S. 84th Street, S. 92nd Street, S. 104th Street, S. 112th Street, S. 116th Street, S. 124th Street and W. Morgan Avenue, W. Howard Avenue, W. Coldspring Road, W. Layton Avenue, W. Edgerton Avenue, W. Grange Avenue, W. Ramsey Avenue, W. College Avenue, W. Loomis Road, W. Forest Home Avenue, W. Beloit Road, S. 31st Street between W. Edgerton Avenue and W. Grange Avenue.
