Milwaukee Hosting First Republican Presidential Primary Debate Soon

A Republican field of candidates is set to debate in Milwaukee on Aug. 23 before the 2024 presidential election.

MILWAUKEE, WI — America is inching closer and closer to its next presidential election in 2024, and the first debate among Republican primary candidates is only about a month away now in Milwaukee.

The Republican National Committee is set to hold its first GOP primary debate on Aug. 23, and if enough candidates qualify to require it, a second is set for Aug. 24.

A June news release from FOX News Channel announced plans for the cable channel to host the debate. Anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum are set to moderate the first debate, broadcast that evening and held at Fiserv Forum.

A report by USATODAY on Friday points out the importance of the debate with its spotlight on Milwaukee and Wisconsin's status as a swing state.

The criteria to be eligible for the debate include having declared a candidacy with active FEC forms and being eligible to run. Candidates must also meet certain polling and fundraising thresholds, and the candidates have to sign a pledge with the RNC.

Reince Priebus, the former White House chief of staff, told CBS 58 news he expects former President Donald Trump to attend the debate, despite Trump's suggestions otherwise.

On Saturday, CNN Politics broke down the candidates racing to meet the debate's requirements. Candidates who said they have already met the threshold besides Trump include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Vivek Ramaswamy, a tech entrepreneur.
