A police pursuit in Milwaukee on Tuesday ended with police fatally shooting a 31-year-old from Milwaukee, authorities said.

MILWAUKEE, WI — A police pursuit that began near Thurston Avenue and 60th Street in Milwaukee on Tuesday ended with police fatally shooting a suspect, according to authorities.

Police had spotted a car in the area traveling without license plates but when an officer pulled the vehicle over it drove off, sparking a pursuit, police said. The chase ended when the suspect ran a red light and crashed into a bystander's vehicle on Silver Spring Drive at 91st Street, police said.

The suspect ran away after the crash, and police said he was carrying a gun. Officers followed and commanded him to drop the gun until an officer shot the suspect, police said.

No officers were injured but the 31-year-old suspect was fatally injured, according to a police news release. The Waukesha Police Department is leading an investigation into the shooting.
