Milwaukee Responds To Former Police Chief's Court Case

The former chief's attorney called the response "laughable".

MILWAUKEE, WI— Court records Monday showed the City of Milwaukee and the Board of Fire and Police filed a brief to remand the case of the former Chief of Police to the administrative body.

The City’s attorney admitted Alfonso Morales had not received due process.

"The proposed remedy is totally unacceptable,"Morales' attorney, Franklyn Gimbel, said Monday. "As we have alleged, Mr. Morales did not get due process, period. They conceded that."

Alfonso Morales, the former Chief of Police for the City of Milwaukee, filed a case in circuit court in September. He claims his contract was breached; he was denied due process; and the ongoing situation caused a loss of reputation in the community and future career opportunities. And he wants the City to pay him $625,000 in lost wages and legal fees.

To recap: The city's Fire and Police Commission voted unanimously this summer to demote the then Chief of Police. Soon after, he resigned.

Commissioners criticized how Morales handled multiple incidents.

In a response to the circuit court cases filed by Morales, the City’s attorney filed the brief supporting the court to turn the case over to the administrative body again, but Gimbel called the move "laughable".

"I still have very, very strong feelings that this group is not going to give Mr. Morales a fair hearing because they put him in the position they did," Gimbel told the media Monday. "They also made some pretty disparaging remarks in their conversation when they adopted the motion to demote him."

Gimbel said they don't have to formally respond to the brief until early December. He's yet to disclose their next step.

The Mayor’s office hasn’t responded to a request for comment from Monday afternoon.
