NWS Warns More Heavy Rain Could Worsen Wisconsin Flooding This Weekend

More storms this weekend could bring heavy rain and flooding to parts of Wisconsin still drying out from the floods.

MILWAUKEE, WI — The National Weather Service says multiple rounds of thunderstorms will bring the potential for severe weather and heavy rain to Wisconsin starting Friday night and continuing into early next week, just days after parts of the state saw significant rainfall and flooding.

Forecasters say a north-to-south-oriented band of rain showers and thunderstorms will move from west to east across the state tonight.

Some storms could produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds, with the strongest storms expected in central and northern Wisconsin. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible in the heaviest downpours.

After last weekend’s deluge, forecasters warn that additional heavy rain could quickly lead to new or worsening flooding, particularly in areas that already received a lot of precipitation.

Saturday night into Sunday morning appears to be the most likely time for heavy rainfall in southern Wisconsin, with another round possible Sunday night into Monday morning.

Through Sunday, the highest chances for over 1 inch of rain are in central Wisconsin, where probabilities range from 74 to 84 percent. The chance of seeing more than 2 inches is lower but still notable, especially from Montello to Portage.

The wet pattern could linger into Tuesday morning. The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of central and southern Wisconsin under a slight risk for excessive rainfall Saturday into Saturday night, with a marginal risk for parts of the state on Sunday.
