New Berlin Detective Shooting In Milwaukee; 2 Suspects Injured: Police

New Berlin police said two detectives were conducting follow-up in Milwaukee on Monday when one fired shots, injuring two suspects.

MILWAUKEE, WI — A detective from New Berlin fired shots on March amid a follow-up investigation for a stolen vehicle in Milwaukee Monday afternoon, causing two suspects to be hospitalized, according to police.

Detectives were in the area of the 2900 block of North 56th Street around 4:30 p.m. after they located a vehicle that was stolen from New Berlin in Milwaukee, police said. A "critical incident" then led to the detective firing his weapon, police said. Police noted that there were several firearms located in the suspect vehicle but did not detail exactly what led up to the shooting.

Neither detective was injured in the encounter, police said. The suspects sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were brought to a hospital and are now in the Milwaukee Police Department's custody awaiting charges, according to a news release.

The New Berlin detectives who were involved were placed on administrative leave. Both are fully cooperating, police said. One has 15 years of service with the department while the other has 22 years of experience.

The Milwaukee Police Department is the lead agency investigating the shooting.
