📰 News we're reading

1. Will Red-Light Cameras Come to Milwaukee? (milwaukeemag.com) — Milwaukee drivers could soon see up to 75 red-light and speed cameras installed at high-crash intersections across all 15 aldermanic districts if state lawmakers approve the Safe Roads Save Lives Act. The bipartisan bill targets reckless driving with automated tickets, a five-year pilot, and safeguards on camera placement, data use, and how fine revenue can be spent.

2. Milwaukee apartment fire raises questions about tenant rights (fox6now.com) — Milwaukee renters displaced by a Christmas Day fire at Colonial Creek Apartments are learning they may not owe rent on uninhabitable units and should seek legal advice. Attorneys urge tenants citywide to understand state protections, carry renter’s insurance, and use Milwaukee’s Department of Neighborhood Services website to check buildings before signing leases.

3. Former students give conflicting accounts of Milwaukee coach after slapping allegations (tmj4.com) — A Milwaukee Public Schools basketball coach at Milwaukee School of Languages has been removed from school duties while the district investigates an allegation he slapped a student during practice. Former students are now sharing sharply different accounts of his behavior, with one praising his mentorship and another describing intimidation and long-lasting emotional harm.

4. EXCLUSIVE: New MPS deputy superintendent on leave in Minneapolis amidst financial crisis investigation (tmj4.com) — Milwaukee Public Schools’ newly hired deputy superintendent of operations, a longtime Minneapolis finance official, was placed on administrative leave in Minnesota amid a financial paperwork and budget shortfall investigation. MPS, which recently faced its own state reporting lapse, says it only learned of the situation yesterday and is reviewing it with the city attorney before deciding how to proceed.

5. Parking garage collapses, vehicle falls into basement at Milwaukee apartment building (jsonline.com) — A section of the ground-level parking garage at the Empire Building on Milwaukee’s east side suddenly collapsed Wednesday evening, dropping at least one vehicle into the basement but causing no reported injuries. Fire officials and city inspectors are assessing whether the structure poses any ongoing risk to residents, who were not evacuated from the apartments above the damaged garage.
