Watch: Man Arrested After 3-Mile West Allis Police Chase And Crash

A chase on Monday lasted miles and ended in the arrest of a convicted felon who had a gun and a warrant, according to West Allis police.

WEST ALLIS, WI — After an automated license plate reader in West Allis notified police of a car that had sped off days earlier from a traffic stop, police tracked down the car and chased it until it crashed and the driver was arrested, the West Allis Police Department said in a statement to social media.

The first pursuit happened in the early morning of July 27, police said. An officer on patrol spotted the car speeding before it ran a red light, so the officer tried to stop it, but the driver sped away and the officer decided against following because of reckless driving and speed, according to police. But the officer marked the license plate in the city's Flock camera system, police said, which would later alert authorities that the car had returned.

That came in the late evening of Monday when the car passed a Flock camera and an officer was alerted, police said. Once police tried to stop the man, a chase began and another officer used stop sticks on the fleeing car, police said.

The chase lasted around three miles traveling down parts of National Avenue and eventually ended near the stadium freeway when the suspect crashed his car and tried to run away, police said.

Officers were able to catch the 28-year-old man from Milwaukee on foot and arrest him, police said. Police said the man has an open felony case and a warrant out, and that officers found drugs and paraphernalia inside the car plus a gun despite the man being a convicted felon.
