Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- Huntsville Parks and Recreation has received a $70,000 grant that will fund the expansion of the city's Male Mentorship Program. The grant is being awarded by The National Recreation and Park Association, and Huntsville Parks and Recreation is one of only 20 grant winners. The Male Mentorship Program in Huntsville works with boys and young men between the ages of seven and 17 to learn skills and build social connections. The program is set to resume in August, and a city official said they will be able to double the number of young people the program serves. (WHNT)
- The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education held public interviews for the three final candidates for the superintendent position on Thursday. In separate interviews, each candidate faced questions about teacher retention and transparency. Dr. Bren Elliott said she could collaborate with teachers and principals to create a successful work environment, while Interim Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton shared his experience as an administrator at a Tuscaloosa magnet school. Dr. Jermaine Dawson said he would prioritize listening to community concerns. The board is expected to vote on Jun. 13 for the next superintendent. (WAFF)
