Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:
- The Huntsville City Council recently held a work session to discuss Mayor Tommy Battle's proposed budget for fiscal year 2024. The proposed operating budget for the city is $312,814,218, which includes the general fund, a capital fund for purchases like vehicles, as well as a capital fund for infrastructure. The proposed budget also accounts for the city's growth and includes funds for over 3,000 full and part-time jobs across the city's departments. The city council is set to vote on the budget at its meeting on Sep. 28. (Rocket City Now)
- Huntsville has been ranked as the No. 1 job market in the United States by SmartAsset. When compiling their list, SmartAsset considered each city's employment rates, commute times, income, and affordability. Of the 340 locations considered, Huntsville came out on top for its 3.8 percent unemployment rate and a relatively high median income of just over $70,000. Huntsville also has some of the nation's most affordable housing and average commute times of around 20 minutes. (Huntsville Business Journal)
- According to the Huntsville Police Department, one person was injured in a "cutting" incident on Sunday, Sep. 24. The incident occurred on Johnson Road around 7:40 p.m. An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection to this incident and is facing a charge of second-degree assault. One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transferred to the hospital. (WHNT)
