Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- At a budget meeting on Wednesday evening, Huntsville city leaders discussed prioritizing road repairs and drainage improvements in the budget for fiscal year 2023-2024. Councilwoman Jennie Robinson is set to lead the effort to assign funds for drainage improvement, noting that home values can be negatively impacted by streets with poor drainage. Councilman Bill Kling is advocating for an increase in street sweeping, which he says would also improve water drainage by removing debris from street gutters. The city's official budget should be completed by Oct. 1. (WAFF)
- On Apr. 25, the Von Braun Center hosted a concert, and a portion of the proceeds supported two Huntsville police officers who were shot in the line of duty. Officer Garret Crumby died as a result of his injuries, and Officer Albert Morin sustained life-threatening injuries but has recently returned to work. The George Jones tribute concert was one of the largest in the venue's history. The singer's wife, Nancy Jones, recently presented an $80,000 check to the Huntsville Police Department for the continued support of Officer Crumby's family and Officer Morin. (WAAY 31)
- The popular sport Broomball is returning to the Huntsville Ice Sports Center. On Tuesday, Jul. 25 from 7:50-8:45 p.m., the center is holding a Broomball Open House for players aged 12 and older. Sticks and helmets will be provided for players, along with rinkside ice cream and halftime games. On Saturday, Jul. 22, the center will host a game of Brewball from 5:00-6:00 p.m., which is open to players aged 21 and older. Helmets and sticks will be provided, and there will be pizza and draft beer after the game. (WHNT)
