Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:

  1. The Summer Food Service Program with Huntsville City Schools will kick off on Jun. 5. Children under the age of 18 can receive free breakfast and lunch Monday-Thurday. The first round of the Summer Food Service Program runs through Jun. 29, and the second round of the program will run through Jul. 13. There are over a dozen locations in Huntsville where children can receive free meals, click here for a full list. (WBRC)
  2. National Copper and Smelting is reportedly planning to close its facility in Huntsville. According to an email obtained by News 19, the plant's final day of operation will be Jul. 24. National Copper has been operating in Huntsville since 1982 and currently resides in a 90,000-square-foot facility. It is unclear what impact this closure will have on employees. (WHNT)
  3. The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education is searching for a new superintendent ahead of the upcoming school year. The school board has a legal deadline to fill the position within 180 days or the state's Board of Education will step in to assist. The Huntsville board is set to begin reviewing candidates, and there will be a public meeting on Jun. 6 to present the top three candidates to the community. Public interviews have not been scheduled yet, but are expected to take place Jun. 7-12. (WHNT)
