Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:

  1. Dr. Clarence Sutton, the new superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, is determined to make the district the best in the state and the nation. He aims to achieve this by providing passionate, qualified teachers and supporting them to ensure all students reach their potential. The strategic plan will focus on student success, ensuring every student receives a quality education experience from pre-K to 12th grade. Additionally, student safety is a priority, with the implementation of new weapons detection systems in schools. (WAAY)
  2. CNI Solutions is organizing its annual "Fresh 2 School" Braid-A-Thon on Jul. 30 at 8:00 a.m., where hundreds of students in grades six through 12 from Madison County can get their hair braided, retwisted, or even get haircuts free of charge before the first day of school. The event has seen an increase in registrations, with around 350 students already signed up, doubling last year's participation. The Braid-A-Thon aims to help students feel their best by providing them with the perfect hairstyles for the start of the new school year. (WHNT News 19)
  3. Residents of Huntsville Summit Apartments were evacuated early Tuesday morning due to water leakage and smoke inside the building. First responders successfully evacuated the 81 occupied units and 100 residents, providing them with shelter at the Max Luther Community Center along with necessary amenities. While some residents expressed dissatisfaction with the arrangements, the apartment's property owner is assessing the damage and working on plans for accommodation during the repair process.
