Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- A man charged with capital murder in the fatal Mar. 28 shooting of a Huntsville police officer appeared in court this week for a preliminary hearing. Juan Laws, 24, has been accused of killing Officer Garrett Crumby and seriously wounding Officer Albert Morin in what a special agent with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency described as an "ambush-style attack." Investigators presented testimony to Madison County District Judge Linda Coats who ruled that there was probable cause for the case to be sent to a Madison County grand jury. (WHNT)
- Huntsville-based general contractor Turner Construction is offering a free eight-week workshop for local businesses that are owned by veterans, women, or racial minorities. The course is aimed at helping business owners find opportunities to work on local construction projects. Classes will begin on Jul. 13 at Bryant Bank and will run on Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Registration will be open from May 30 through Jun. 30; more information is available at this link. (WAAY)
- Work is expected to begin soon on the biggest construction project Downtown Huntsville has seen in a century. The vacant land between Clinton and Holmes Avenues will soon be home to a $325 million development, which will include in its first phase at least 500 apartment units, 36,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, and 35,000 square feet of office space. Phase one of construction is expected to take two and a half years. The city is set to spend at least $18 million on infrastructure improvements for the project, including upgrades to Pinhook Creek.
