Huntsville: The Innovative ‘Rocket City’ Filled With Rich History

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Huntsville so special.

Huntsville is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Huntsville has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Huntsville is known as the "Rocket City" due to the important role it played in the development of space technology. The city is home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, which houses the largest collection of space artifacts in the world, including a Saturn V rocket, the same type that sent astronauts to the moon.
  • Huntsville was a key location during the Civil War, with several important battles and skirmishes occurring in and around the city. The Huntsville Depot, now a museum, was a major transportation hub for Confederate troops and supplies during the war.
