Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:
- Ohio representative Jim Jordan is pushing for Huntsville to be the new location for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Jordan reportedly plans to attach a rider to upcoming appropriations bills that would strip the agency of funding unless it moves to the city. The FBI has been considering relocating from the J. Edgar Hoover Building to a location in Maryland or Virginia. According to reporting from the Wall Street Journal, this move is the latest escalation from Republicans who say that the FBI is overly partisan. The FBI cited "numerous operational reasons" for keeping its operations centered near Washington, D.C. (AL.com)
- The Huntsville International Airport is set to undergo construction to bring some improvements to travelers. The airport will be adding a cell phone lot to make it easier for incoming travelers to coordinate their pick-up. Drivers can wait in the cell phone lot until the person they're picking up is ready to go, which is expected to reduce congestion around the terminal. (Rocket City Now)
- On Saturday, Jul. 8, a mother and her son discovered hundreds of dead fish nearby in the Flint River. Tennessee Riverkeeper Founder David Whiteside said that while he isn't certain why so many fish died, there are several possible reasons. He speculated that there could be pollutants entering the water from the nearby landfill or sewage treatment plant. He also said that recent high temperatures could have played a role by reducing oxygen levels in the water. Whiteside advised residents to avoid the area until the situation can be investigated further. (WAFF)
