Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- The Alabama Senate and House have passed a joint resolution to reassert Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal as the best choice for the site of U.S. Space Command Headquarters. Senate Majority Leader Clay Scofield described Huntsville as the "premier location" due to its history in aerospace and defense, as well as its geographic location with local research centers and defense partners. The resolution is intended to dispute claims that Alabama is not an ideal location for Space Command Headquarters and urge the Biden administration to confirm Redstone Arsenal as the permanent location. - The Huntsville City Board of Education has announced three finalists for the district's superintendent. Finalists include the district's current interim superintendent, Clarence Sutton, as well as Jermaine Dawson, an official with Birmingham City Schools, and Bren Elliott, a public schools administrator in Washington, D.C. Interviews will begin today, Jun. 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Huntsville High School. The interviews are open to the public, and they will also be recorded for later viewing. The school board could vote on a new superintendent as early as Jun. 13. (Subscription: AL.com)
- The Boys and Girls Club of North Alabama is set to receive a new facility in North Huntsville. Located at the old Whitesburg Baptist Church, the facility will be able to serve up to 4,000 children with areas for STEM activities and a smart gym sponsored by Meta. Renovations on the site are set to begin later this year. This will be the organization's first physical location in Huntsville. (Rocket City Now)
