Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- The Madison County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a telephone scam where callers claim to be law enforcement and threaten arrest for missing a court date or overdue fines unless immediate payment is made. The sheriff's office advises the public to be cautious, never give personal or financial information to unsolicited callers, and hang up to verify the legitimacy of the call with the law enforcement agency's official number. They also urge anyone who believes they have fallen victim to this scam to notify their bank and local law enforcement. (WHNT News 19)
- Shaquon Moore, 28, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault by the Huntsville Police Department after a shooting incident on Torrance Drive at around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jul. 16. The victim, a man, was transported to Huntsville Hospital with a gunshot wound and is in stable condition. Moore is currently being held at the Madison County Jail on a $20,000 bond. (WHNT News 19)
- Grateful Recovery, a nonprofit organization, organized Alabama's first "Mending the Mind: Mental Health Fair" on Saturday to address the difficulties individuals face when seeking help for mental health issues. The fair aimed to raise awareness about mental health and connect people with the necessary resources. Various organizations, such as Magnolia Ranch Recovery and Clinic 6:52, participated to offer counseling, addiction recovery, prevention education, and reproductive and sexual health services, all with the goal of empowering individuals to improve their well-being and share knowledge with their communities.
