Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:

  1. The City of Huntsville is expanding its greenway network by adding 1.5 miles of new greenway between Hobbs and Green Cove roads and connecting the Elgie’s Walk Greenway to Ditto Landing. This expansion is part of Phase 3 of the Tennessee River Greenway project, which was authorized by the City Council. The final link will create a 15-mile greenway loop in South Huntsville, providing more quality-of-life amenities for residents and visitors. (City of Huntsville)
  2. The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is hosting a "Be Local Bash" event on the first weekend of May to introduce newcomers to the North Alabama community. The event includes demonstrations by local organizations, appearances by local authors, performances by local musicians, and activities for the whole family. This provides an opportunity to showcase the library's resources and programming, as well as for the public to learn about local non-profits, businesses, and community partners. (The Madison Record)
  3. May is Historic Preservation Month and the city of Huntsville will partner with local organizations and businesses to celebrate. Spearheaded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, seeks to promote the social and economic benefits of historic preservation and heighten awareness about buildings and places that are part of our shared history. The #SavingPlacesHsv campaign on social media will showcase numerous events and blogs highlighting activities and opportunities for Preservation Month in May. (Fox 54 News)

From my notebook:

  • A new study by Bumper.com found that electric vehicle ‘charging deserts’ – places where charging stations and ports are in short supply – stretch across states, largely divided by economic and racial lines. On average in Alabama, there are 0.91 charge ports per 10,000 people. Learn more about EV charging rates in Alabama and nationwide at the link. (Bumper.com)
  • Meet Tori, a 3-year-old, lean and lanky tortie cat with a plushy thick coat and green and amber eyes. She is friendly, loves attention and pets, and has a delightful purr. Tori enjoys lazy playtime, gets along with other friendly cats but not dogs, and is looking for her fur-ever home. (Greater Huntsville Humane Society via Facebook)
  • Join Oakwood University tonight, Apr. 29, for the first annual R.A.W. Spring Concert. The performance is hosted by R.A.W. Ministries and the Oakwood University Choir. (Oakwood University via Facebook)
