Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:
- The Huntsville City Council is considering an amendment to strengthen the city's existing law regarding the use of cell phones and other wireless devices while driving. If approved, the updated ordinance would ban drivers from reading, writing, or sending text messages, taking pictures, and watching or recording videos. It would also prohibit drivers from holding cell phones or wireless devices or engaging in voice-based communication while holding a device. The proposed update would allow law enforcement to treat handheld device violations as a primary offense. The City Council will vote on the updated ordinance at its next regular meeting on Thursday, Sep. 14. (City of Huntsville, Alabama - Government via Facebook)
- This Friday, Sep. 8, members of the Huntsville Stars will be reunited at Toyota Field. Dale Tofoya, author of "One Season in Rocket City," worked with the Trash Pandas to bring the members of the 1985 Huntsville Stars team to the annual reunion. Several former players are lined up to attend, including Charlie O'Brien, Greg Cadaret, and Rob Nelson. The reunion will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon at Toyota Field. - Home prices have stabilized in and around Huntsville, but that follows several years of increasing prices. In Morgan and Limestone counties, home prices have increased by around 70 percent over the last five years, according to Stacker.com. Bennie Waller, a fellow at the University of Alabama's Culverhouse College of Business, theorized that the recent stabilization in prices is due to buyers waiting until they find a "good deal." However, prices are increasing in nearby Morgan County as buyers continue to seek more affordable options. (Subscription: AL.com)
