Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:

  1. Alabama Congressman Dale Strong is speaking out following the Biden administration's decision to cancel the anticipated move of U.S. Space Command Headquarters to Huntsville. Strong has promised investigations into the decision, saying that he wants to hear from military leadership regarding the decision. Strong is placing blame on the commander of Space Command Gen. James Dickenson and Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall for what he is calling a political decision. (WAAY)
  2. Huntsville Culinary Month and Restaurant Week kicked off on Aug. 1. In its eleventh year, Huntsville Restaurant Week aims to highlight local restaurants and chefs. From Aug. 11-20, 87 Huntsville restaurants will be offering discounts and specials. There will be special events throughout the month, and the Rocket City Delivered app is offering the code HRW2023 to waive delivery fees for participating restaurants. (Huntsville Business Journal)
  3. Three local nonprofit organizations are working together to bring free health and community services to residents in North Alabama. On Monday, Aug. 7, there will be free health screenings provided by Central North Alabama Health Services at the Salvation Army from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 12, the Community Fun & Wellness Festival will take place at the Dr. Richard Shower's Recreation Center from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. This event will include school supply giveaways, prizes, a petting zoo, live music, and more.   • Two Huntsville Police Department officers were recently awarded Lifesaving Medals. Officers Wesley Widner and Michael Tucker received this commendation following an incident in November 2022 where they provided life-saving first aid to a man with a gunshot wound.
