Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:
- U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) is continuing his efforts to bring the U.S. Space Command headquarters to Huntsville. For the second time, he has blocked legislation that would have enabled the agency to continue building out its current, temporary, location in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Alabama lawmakers are concerned that the agency's move to Huntsville becomes less likely if more funds are being spent on the Colorado Springs location. (AL.com)
- The University of Alabama in Huntsville is now home to a new climate program called Alabama Drought Reach. This program aims to benefit local farmers and agriculture - Alabama's largest industry - by improving drought literacy. As part of the program, agents will collect wetness data at certain farm sites. This data will be used to determine the state's drought classification and will be shared with farmers within their respective counties. (Rocket City Now)
- The Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering is the country's only high school that incorporates engineering and cyber technology into all academic programs. The magnet high school is public and tuition-free and will serve over 300 students in the upcoming school year. School President Matt Massey explained that each senior takes part in an internship with companies like Raytheon or Alabama Supercomputer Authority, which helps prepare students for careers in these industries.
