Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:

  1. U. S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Alabama) is asking the U. S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and the U. S. Air Force to stand by their previous decision to move the U. S. Space Command headquarters to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. Britt's comments come a day after reports indicated that the Biden administration is considering leaving the Space Command headquarters at its current location in Colorado. Britt noted that Redstone Arsenal finished first in the Air Force's evaluation phase and also its selection phase. She implored Austin to "cut through the politics" when making a final decision. (AL.com)
  2. The newly updated Joe Davis Stadium held a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently after completing over $30 million in renovations. Mayor Tommy Battle said the stadium will be a community gathering space, and there are plans for events such as concerts and festivals. The Huntsville City Football Club will play its inaugural home game at the stadium on May 19. (WHNT)
  3. Volunteers are needed to place flags on veterans' graves at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville in advance of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5162's annual VFW Memorial Day Ceremony. Flag placement will take place on May 20 at 8:00 a.m., and flag recovery is scheduled for Jun. 3 at 9:00 a.m. Michael Gronkowski, the commander for District 1 in Alabama, is expecting to place around 3,000 flags and would like to have 50 to 75 volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Gronkowski at 570-417-7811 or michael.gronkowski@yahoo.com. (The Redstone Rocket)
