Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- U.S. Representatives from Alabama have submitted a draft bill to the House that would block funding for construction at the temporary Space Command Headquarters, currently located in Colorado Springs. The bill has bipartisan support from state lawmakers who are seeking to restrict any growth or modernizing of facilities at the Colorado Springs site until the secretary of the Air Force decides on the permanent location for Space Command Headquarters. Previously, the Trump administration decided to locate the headquarters in Huntsville, however, recent reports indicate that the move may not take place under the Biden administration due to Alabama's abortion ban. (WAFF)
- The Huntsville Botanical Garden is launching a new program called Cultivate for STEM teachers in grades K-6. This program gives teachers hands-on training and increased confidence to incorporate STEM into their lessons. Attendees will receive two continuing education units, STEM resources, and a curriculum to take home. Registration is now open, and educators are encouraged to apply for a scholarship for a 90 percent discount. (Huntsville Business Journal)
- An officer with the Huntsville Police Department has been charged with driving under the influence. D’Marius Howard, who has been with HPD since February 2020, was arrested on May 27 in Opelika. He has since been placed on administrative duty, and an HPD spokesperson confirmed that his gun and badge were taken away. (WHNT)
