Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:
- Several members of the state House of Representatives have spoken out this week in support of Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal as the new permanent home of U.S. Space Command. Huntsville was selected two years ago as the site for Space Command's headquarters, but recent reports indicate that the move from Colorado may no longer happen due to Alabama's abortion ban, although the White House denies this reasoning. State Rep. James Lomax was among those who spoke out in support of Redstone Arsenal, saying, "It's not just an Army base, it is a federal center of excellence." (WAFF)
- The U.S. Space & Rocket Center held its ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday for its newest facility, the Space Camp Operations Center. The facility, sponsored by Boeing, will serve as a main hub for Space Camp programs and will be the new home for U.S. Cyber Camp. Space Camp alumni include 14 flown astronauts and two astronauts who are currently in training, along with countless engineers and technicians. (Huntsville Business Journal)
- This weekend, over 300 athletes from 40 countries will be in Huntsville for the Union Cycliste International Para-Cycling Road World Cup. This is an international event that helps prepare athletes in the lead-up to the 2024 Paralympics. Athletes have expressed excitement about the course for its wide turns and scenery, which will take cyclists through Cummings Research Park. This will be Huntsville's third para-cycling race since 2021, and more information is available here. (The Madison Record)
