Sellers said there is no evidence at this time to suggest the shooting was intentional or involved another person.
He then said that based on witness statements, investigators believe the victim was playing with a firearm when it discharged.
The identities of the victim and other involved parties are not being released because all individuals involved are juveniles.
Police said there may be pending charges related to individuals prohibited from possessing a firearm due to their age but Sellers said the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's Office will be consulted to determine whether charges are appropriate.
