Construction Resumes At Mare Island Preserve, Naval Cemetery

Work was halted in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

VALLEJO, CA— Construction resumed Tuesday at the Mare Island Preserve and Naval Cemetery in Vallejo. The preserve is expected to reopen to the public on Oct. 9.

The project by the U.S. Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training Program, which requires closing the preserve to the public until work is complete, includes grading, installation of drainage systems, minor restoration of burial sites, and fence repair throughout the property.

Work was halted in March due to COVID-19, and the preserve was reopened in May for limited public access every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Vallejo closed the Mare Island Preserve in October 2019 after a series of wildfires burned more than 40 acres.

City staff has since addressed wildfire-related issues at the open space, including shoring up burned areas and addressing safety issues resulting from severe fire damage.
