Anticipated Berkeley Restaurant Opens Friday
Featured by both the Chronicle and EaterSF, will this become the toughest reservation to land in Berkeley? Explore the buzz!
BERKELEY, CA — EaterSF made just three recommendations in its article, Three Hotly Anticipated Bay Area Restaurant Openings Not to Miss This Spring — two in San Francisco, and Elsie’s on Solano Avenue in Berkeley.
They were selected because "all come from vets of the restaurant industry, making for places that longtime food adventurers will likely want to check out as soon as possible."
You won't have to wait long — Elsie’s is scheduled to open this Friday.

Cash Caris ran the popular Delirama, which closed at the start of February. But he wasn't done with the restaurant business, just ready for a change, according to EaterSF which said, "Elsie’s will open in Delirama’s place, with dishes inspired by Caris’s paternal grandmother, Elsie. It’s a personal project for Caris, and the new restaurant will serve items such as a “Sunday” roast with polenta and beans; gnocchi with sweet potato; and, of course, a pastrami sandwich, though it’ll be made differently at the new restaurant."
The restaurant will serve beer and wine, with the wine menu curated by Joseph Catalino, the former sommelier for Slanted Door.
Caris told the San Francisco Chronicle, "I think it’s going to be hard for a lot of people to change their perception of what I do and what I’m capable of doing. I’m excited to show everybody, look I can make great pastrami but that’s not who I am. This is me now."

For those who shudder at the loss of Delirama, Caris has big plans for pastrami at Elsie's, "There’s still a pastrami sandwich, but it’s been tweaked. Instead of rye bread, it’s now on a house-baked French roll smeared with a paprika-dijonaise and sauerkraut slaw. Pastrami bacon, once served on bagels and breakfast sandwiches at Delirama, will accompany dates stuffed with manchego cheese and smoked paprika honey. Caris will fold extra bits of pastrami into pierogi dough; the dumplings will be seared and tossed with butter, fried shallots and a little sauerkraut, then topped with crème fraîche and chives."
Elsie’s is at 1746 Solano Avenue in Berkeley.
