BERKELEY, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard helped two people on a boat near the Berkeley shoreline after a fire disabled one of their engines Monday.
At about 3 p.m., the Coast Guard received a distress call about a boat on fire in the waters near the Berkeley Marina.
A boat from Coast Guard Station San Francisco was sent to help and issued an urgent marine information broadcast, Coast Guard officials said.

By the time the Coast Guard crew arrived on scene, the fire was extinguished, the boat was close to the marina's breakwater and the vessel's starboard side engine was inoperable.
Because its port side engine was still working, the two people aboard the boat were able to coax it back to the Berkeley Marina while being escorted by the Coast Guard.
