BERKELEY, CA — Being from Los Angeles, I never knew there were deer in Berkeley or any part of the East Bay.

But Fremont resident Steve Dhillon sent these photos to Patch over the weekend of one roaming around the backyard of his rental property in Berkeley.

Apparently, the black-tailed deer, a subspecies of mule deer, resides in the East Bay region, according to wildlife officials.

They can smell danger half a mile away, and when frightened, spring 15 feet forward. They can also clear obstacles over 10 feet high with a single jump, according to the East Bay Regional Park District.
