BERKELEY, CA — Voters in Berkeley will decide on Measure Y this November, a proposal aimed at increasing funding for the city’s parks and recreation services through an increase in a special tax.

The measure would impose a higher levy on property owners to address maintenance needs and improvements for city parks, recreation facilities, and the Berkeley Waterfront.

If approved, Measure Y will adjust the existing parks tax, increasing the rate from $0.1575 to $0.1975 per square foot of taxable improvements for single-family residential properties.

For other types of properties, the tax would be raised from $0.2385 to $0.2975 per square foot.

The funds would be used to maintain safe, accessible parks, repair infrastructure, and provide environmental stewardship for open spaces.

Proponents of Measure Y argue that Berkeley’s parks and recreational facilities have suffered from years of deferred maintenance and are in dire need of repairs and upgrades. They point out that the funds generated by this tax increase would also support public recreation programs for residents of all ages.

Opponents, however, express concern over the impact on property owners, especially during a time the cost of living has soared. They argue that the tax burden could be too high for homeowners and businesses.

A two-thirds majority vote is required for Measure Y to pass.
