Scam Alert From Berkeley Police

Police warn that fraudsters are spoofing their phone number.

BERKELEY, CA — Berkeley police are warning the public about scammers using the police department's phone number on Thursday morning.

Authorities said they have received multiple reports of scammers calling victims using the main police number: 510-981-5900. The scammers claim the victim or a family member committed a crime and demand payment over the phone.

Police explained this is a spoofing scam, where criminals disguise their numbers to trick people. They emphasized that the police will never call to demand money or threaten arrest.
