Suspect In West Berkeley Shooting Arrested At SFO: Police

One of the suspects left for Jamaica after the shooting and was arrested when he returned, police said.

BERKELEY, CA — Two people have been arrested in connection with a shooting in West Berkeley earlier this month, police said.

The suspected shooter, 44-year-old Ernest Portlock, was taken into custody Friday after arriving at San Francisco Airport from Jamaica, according to the Berkeley Police Department.

Lanika Connors, who is accused of serving as the getaway driver during the shooting, was arrested Monday, police said.

Police say Portlock fired shots at a home in the 1000 block of Addison Street on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 12. Connors then drove him away from the scene, police said.

Officers used Automated License Plate Readers to track down the Honda, which led them to Connors, police said.

Portlock was charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday with shooting at an occupied dwelling, negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and criminal possession of a firearm while masked, police said. He also faces other felony enhancements, they added.

Connors, meanwhile, was charged with shooting at an occupied dwelling, negligent discharge of a firearm and being an accessory to the crime, police said.

Nobody was injured in the shooting, and police said the investigation "underscores the Berkeley Police Department’s commitment to addressing gun violence and protecting the safety of our community."
