'Always The First To Step Up And Help Someone Out': Carlsbad Hero

CARLSBAD, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We're working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Christie Nunan, who nominated her son, Finn of Carlsbad.

How do you know the local hero?

What does the local hero do?

He's a seventh-grade student at Valley.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

His mom (me) manages a charitable foundation for family caregivers to those with mental health conditions. Finn wanted to make a donation to the charity with his own money. But together we brainstormed other ways to help: Finn typed a short message that he delivered throughout his neighborhood asking neighbors to leave their recycling cans and plastics for him to pick up and donate the proceeds to the foundation. He gave them a date, and then went porch to porch collecting the items on that date. So many neighbors participated! And a few left personal notes of how proud they were of him. He then went to the recycling center and collected $80 which he donated to the foundation. (He initially had $20 to give of his own money but he turned that into $80 by getting the neighborhood involved.) He then followed up with all the neighbors who participated with another letter of gratitude and how much they raised together and how together they were helping family caregivers.

Finn is always the first to step up and help someone out.
