$4.3 Million Deficit Hits Castro Valley School District For Next Year

Castro Valley Unified School District's Superintendent says the deficit is a result of the state withholding money from the schools.

Castro Valley Unified School District excepts a shortfall of $4.3 million for the next school year.

Superintendent Jim Negri told The Daily Review that the deficit is due to the CVUSD not receiving funds from the state.

He said the district will receive $5,229 per student for the next year, instead of the $6,727 it was entitled to.

According to Negri, that gap began in the 2008-09 school year and it is what continues to hit the schools to date.

The Daily Review reports that CVUSD is in a holding pattern until the November election. That's when voters will get to decide the outcome of Gov. Jerry Brown's tax initiative.

Despite having funds in the reserve that will get the school district through the next year, Negri said if the tax does not pass, the district will face a possible $8 million deficit for 2013-14.
