Alameda County Employee Struck, Killed By Car In Hayward

The driver of a Camaro is suspected of street racing in the fatal collision. He was booked into jail, police said.

HAYWARD, CA — A 58-year-old pedestrian died after she was struck by a car in Hayward on Monday night in a suspected street-racing incident, police said. At 8:26 p.m. Monday, the driver of a Camaro was traveling north on Mission Boulevard when he struck the woman, identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau today as Esther Concepcion of Hayward, who was crossing Mission Boulevard within the defined crosswalk, according to police.

Concepcion suffered major injuries and was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she later died, police said.

According to online records, she was an Alameda County employee who worked as a supervisor's assistant.

The Camaro driver, a 21-year-old Hayward man, stopped after the collision and remained at the scene of the collision for authorities to respond, according to police.

It's suspected that street racing was a contributing factor in the collision, police said.

The Camaro driver was arrested and booked into the Hayward Jail, according to authorities. His name was not immediately available.

Hayward police said the collision is still under investigation and any witnesses are asked to call Sgt. Garett Wagner at their traffic bureau at 510-293-7121.
